GREECE – An ancient civilization.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe. Modern Greece is the result of extraordinarily diverse influences from the Romans, Arabs, Latin Crusaders, Venetians, Slavs, Albanians, Turks, Italians, and also the Byzantine Empire, who have been and gone since the time of Alexander the Great. Greece became independent from the Ottoman Empire in 1829. It gradually started adding neighboring islands and territories, most with Greek-speaking populations. What makes a visitor’s experience in the country unforgettable is their zest for life, their curiosity and their warm hospitality to the visitors. The country is the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, Western literature and historiography, political science, major scientific and mathematical principles, and Western drama, including both tragedy and comedy.
Climate
Greece is perfect for those who enjoy the sun. It has a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and wet winters. Summers witness extremes of 37°C (99°F), making the yearly mean temperature about 17°C (63°F). Rainfall figures vary, depending on the region. In the mountainous regions, however, rainfall is heavier, snow is likely and temperatures are severe. Light weight clothing is advisable during summers and you can carry few warm clothes if you plan to visit the mountains.
Places to visit
Capital of Greece, Athens is remarkable by the big number of the monuments and the greatest historical place such as Acropolis, Parthenon and many more. Greece has the pulsing nightclubs of Mykonos and the ancient beauty of Delos; the grandeur of Delphi and the earthiness of Ioannina; the rugged hillsides of Crete and the beautiful wildflowers of spring. The blinding light of the Mykonos sun, the melancholy throb of Thessaloniki’s rembetika (blues songs), the tang of home-made tzatziki, and the gossip in the kafeneia (coffee shops) brings the country to life! Visitors who enjoy walking and mountain climbing will find many opportunities on the mainland where they will find thick forests, home to the endangered brown bear, as well as wild cats, goats and roe deer.
